The role of the Basel Committee in enhancing bank governance

The study aims to know the role of the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision in enhancing the requirements, principles and standards of banking governance and the objectives set by that committee to enhance governance in banks.
Based on this, the study addressed the concept of bank governance, its importance, objectives, and most important characteristics, the effective regulatory and legal framework that governs the principles of banking governance, the emergence of the Basel Committee and its role in enhancing and developing bank governance through the standards set by that committee to support the achievement of its objectives.
The study concluded that there is a need for transparency and disclosure in all the work and activities of the bank and management in accordance with the decisions of the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision. This is achieved by providing a clear and true picture of everything that happens. This is done by disclosing financial objectives accurately, publishing annual financial periodic reports in a timely manner, and fair disclosure of financial objectives. The results of these reports enable shareholders and lenders to evaluate the institution’s performance and provide an effective information system that serves the bank’s strategic objectives, ensuring the proper distribution of responsibilities by members of the Board of Directors and setting clear rules and limits for them, with accountability and accountability within the bank, whether for themselves or for all employees alike.
